Restoration Housing cut the ribbon on its latest housing project after almost a full year of work.
The non-profit takes older houses and renovates them.
The house on Patterson Avenue in Roanoke has made a complete 180 degree transformation from what it looked like 10 months ago.
The property is now a duplex and will house two families.
But, the work they do impacts more than just the new tenants.
“When you put this level of restoration into a neighborhood, you see vandalism and crime go down,” said Isabel Thornton of Restoration Housing. “That’s really a huge effect of reducing blight.”
The organization also works to keep rents affordable, preventing people from being pushed out of the neighborhood.
One side of the duplex has three bedrooms and rent for $850 a month, while the other side has two bedrooms and will be $750 a month.
