Roanoke, Va. – A three-year effort to convert a former church and Sunday school annex into affordable housing for older residents was celebrated Wednesday in Roanoke’s Old Southwest neighborhood. Restoration Housing, a nonprofit with a track record of reviving old housing, converted the Sunday school annex into 15 senior apartments for those age 55 and older who earn between zero (while transitioning out of homelessness) and 80% of the area median income.
The former Trinity United Methodist Church, built in 1903, and its 1922 annex, are now known as Trinity Commons. The project at 305 Mountain Ave. S.W., which involved multiple public and private partners and historic tax credits, was designed by Hughes Associates and constructed by Square One Inc. The former worship hall has been preserved as well to continue to serve the community, according to Restoration Housing.
